23 Hindu pilgrims drown
NEW DELHI: At least 23 Hindu pilgrims drowned and 17 others were missing on Monday when an overcrowded boat capsized midstream in a swollen river in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, the Press Trust of India reported.
The boat was carrying 52 pilgrims, mostly women, who were on their way to offer prayers at a temple of the Hindu God Shiva when the accident occurred on the Kankai River in Bihar’s Kishanganj district. Twenty-three bodies have been recovered from the river waters, officials said. Divers were searching for more bodies. —AFP
