Rickshaws given 2 days to install silencers
LAHORE: District Nazim Mian Amer Mehmood on Sunday gave rickshaw drivers two days to fit their vehicles with silencers.
A press release said the city district government had decided to ensure that rickshaws plying in the city are fitted with silencers to curb noise and air pollution.
A previous deadline to install silencers in rickshaws, which was agreed upon by a team of the Muttahida Rickshaw and Taxi Drivers Union (MRTDU) in January 2004, has already lapsed.
The district nazim announced the decision in a meeting with representatives of the Lahore traffic police and a team of the MRTDU Punjab wing.
MRTDU representatives assured the nazim that the union would curb violations by rickshaw drivers. They demanded that rickshaw and taxi drivers should only be fined a maximum Rs 100 for traffic rule violations. The nazim agreed to the demand. staff report
