E Timor a lesson for Kashmir, says Munir Akram
NEW YORK: Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to resolve the Kashmir issue in accordance with its resolution and the promises made to the Kashmiri people.
Addressing the UNSC during its open debate on East Timor on Monday, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Munir Akram, said the UNSC should remember other promises which had not been realised. He urged everyone to bring peace, democracy and social justice to Kashmir by supporting a plebiscite for the Kashmiris, so that the world would know, and abide by, their will. Mr Akram told the UNSC that East Timor was a landmark for the right of self-determination and one of the UN’s major successes. He called upon the international community to assist the government and people of East Timor in improving its economic structure, as this was essential to restore stability there. —APP
