Disabled beggar eighth victim of serial killers

LAHORE: A homeless disabled man was killed on Sunday morning, the eighth victim in 11 days of a new gang of serial killers, just 20 minutes after policemen on patrol had spotted the man as a potential target for the murderers. The eight victims have all been homeless people sleeping on the streets and murdered with a blow to the head. City Division SP Usman Anwar told Daily Times that Sub Inspector Majeed and constables were patrolling in the Mochi Gate area when they spotted a man, who had no legs, sleeping on a footpath at around 4:15am. The SI woke the man and told him to move elsewhere. The man went and sat at a tea stall a few yards away. When the police team was again making its rounds in the area at 4:50am, the man was still sitting at the tea stall. “When they next came, they saw him asleep on the same footpath. SI Majeed went over to wake him, but he was dead. He had been struck on the temple with a small hammer or other blunt weapon” SP Anwar said. The victim was unmarried and a resident of Sandha and used to beg for a living. The SP said the police believed that this gang of serial killers had only two members. He said the police had also hired a psychiatrist for the investigation of the case. The latest two murders, on Sunday and Saturday, had yielded some clues which would help find the criminals. He said the killers had appeared to change their mode of operation, as two people each had been murdered in the first three incidents, while the last two were single murders. He said police teams were patrolling in city from 10pm to 5:30am daily, and inspecting public parks and footpaths to get homeless people off the street. shahnawaz khan
