Quality control lab to be set up at Sundar
LAHORE: The Punjab Industrial Estates Development and Management Company (PIE) will set up a laboratory of an international standard in the Sundar Industrial Estate (SIE) for quality control of medicines. It will also set up a molecular research institute for research and development in pharmaceuticals.
The Punjab government has allocated Rs 50 million for the proposed laboratories while PIE has provided 2.39 acres of land, according to Mohsin Syed, chairman of PIE, while talking to reporters at an iftar reception on Wednesday. There are only two quality control laboratories in the world, which have been approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO): one in South Africa and the other in India. PIE will try and model itself on the South African laboratory’s standards. He said representatives from the pharmaceutical sector had proposed the quality control laboratory so manufacturers could avoid having to set up such a laboratory individually.
Syed said the provincial government had approved this proposal and a committee was working on setting up the Molecular Research Institute. The committee would seek out Pakistanis working overseas and offer them attractive packages so they could work on research and development in Pakistan, he said. staff raeport
