Sexual abuse of student: Human rights activists to protest tomorrow

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The campaign to protest the sexual abuse of students by a college principal who is also a retired Army officer is gaining momentum.

Families and human rights activists have decided to demonstrate in front of Parliament House on Thursday and in front of President’s House on Friday to press their demands for the suspect’s arrest.

“The police is corrupt; the judiciary is weak and parliament is not independent. That is why we have decided to file this case involving innocent students before the president,” said Liquat Binori, head of the Society for Human Rights and Prisoners Aid on Tuesday.

Captain (r) Sherjeel, who used to run a cadet college in Islamabad, is accused of sexually assaulting about 25 students and fleeing when confronted about his actions.

Golra Police registered 4 cases against Mr Sherjeel on sodomy and forgery charges in 1999. He was sent to Aadiala Jail for three years in connection with the sodomy charges. He said the court declared Mr Sherjeel a proclaimed offender in the forgery case. He was running his business in the jurisdiction of the same police station that was seeking to arrest him.

Meanwhile Naeem Iqbal, station house officer of Golra Police station, said the period of transit bail will expire on Wednesday and the accused will be arrested after the expiry of transit bail. He said the case record will be produced in the district and sessions court in Islamabad.
