Supreme Court dismisses election plea against Chattha
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday dismissed a petition against Hamid Nasir Chattha, PML leader. The petitioner had sought the disqualification of Chattha as member of the National Assembly. Petitioner Malik Abdul Rehman contended that Chattha did not fulfill the criterion mentioned in Article 62 of the Constitution to qualify for the election. He argued that Chattha was not eligible to contest the general election from NA-101 because he did not come up to the Islamic standards as described in the Constitution. Article 62 demands that an election candidate should have adequate knowledge of Islamic teachings and must practice obligatory duties prescribed by Islam. The SC bench directed the petitioner to consult the election tribunal and observed that the SC was not a right forum for discussion of election matters. Consequently the petition was dismissed. staff report
