PSMA chairman misleading govt, growers: KWC
LAHORE: Kisan Welfare Council (KWC) President Muhammad Ayub on Wednesday criticised Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) Chairman (Punjab Zone) Javed Kayani for misleading the government and sugarcane growers regarding the sugarcane payments to the growers.
According to a press release, Mr Ayub said Mr Kayani had advertised in a daily paper that the Channar Sugar Mills (owned by Mr Kayani) had made full payments to the growers, which was not true. “Many sugarcane growers from district Faisalabad have informed that their payments are delayed and they are being paid less by the mill through middlemen at the main gate of the mill,” he added. He said “ At the same time Mr Kayani issued a statement to a local paper the very next day that the sugar industry was heading towards huge losses due to the surplus stock of the commodity and was unable to pay arrears to the growers till the stock was disposed of by the government.” He said Mr Kayani was infuriating the growers by giving contradictory statements and that it must be clear whether the advertisement released by Mr Kayani was fake or his statement. He also demanded that Channar Sugar Mills’ accounts be audited by an independent auditor to verify his claim of making full payments. —Staff Report
