Opposition chief leads Ukraine’s presidential race

KIEV: Opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko led on Sunday’s presidential election in Ukraine with 41.98 percent of the vote ahead of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich with 40.11 percent, an exit poll released by the Social Monitoring foundation showed after voting ended.

Another poll compiled by Kiev’s International Institute of Sociology had Yushchenko leading with 45 percent compared to 37 percent for the prime minister.

But the Moscow-based Public Opinion Foundation had the prime minister in the lead with 43 percent compared to the pro-Western opposition leader’s 39 percent.

Should the results hold, Yushchenko and Yanukovich will face each other in a runoff ballot set for November 21. afp
