Elected reps must supervise LB polls: Qaim
KARACHI: The provincial president of the PPPP, Qaim Ali Shah, demanded on Sunday that elected representatives should be appointed to supervise the forthcoming local bodies elections if administrators substituted nazims to ensure free and fair polls.
Speaking at an iftar party at the People’s Secretariat on Sunday, he rejected the government’s proposal to appoint administrators.
He said that the government could rig the polls by appointing its favourites as administrators which is why the Peoples Party had turned down the proposal. He vowed his party would actively participate in the municipal elections and would counter government policies, which, he said, would be aimed at rigging the municipal elections. The PPPP’s parliamentary party leader in the Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro, who is also in the Opposition in the provincial assembly, said that there was no way to overcome the prevailing uncertainty but to hold fresh elections. He said a deal with the government for the release of Asif Ali Zardari was out of the question. Mr Khuhro said his party would play an active role in the anti-Musharraf movement. staff report
