Beaconhouse wins Raziuddin debating championship

Staff Report

LAHORE: Beaconhouse defence branch won the Raziuddin National Debating Championship under-19 finals, held at Atchison College, by beating the Lahore College of Arts and Sciences (LACAS) on Sunday. The topic of the debate was ‘The clash of civilisations’, and the judges ruled 6 to 1 in favour of Beaconhouse.

Raja Changez Khan, the director of National Council of Arts, was the chief guest. The LACAS team consisting of Laiqua Khaild, M Qais Pasha and Ali Shahzad supported the topic, while Beaconhouse defence team, Daniyal Asad, Adeel Sheheryar and Hasnain Fateh, opposed the topic. The panel of judges included Tamiur Bandey, Mehwish Mumtaz, Ayesha Ahmad, Hassan Bilal Malik, Ali Jaan, Ammara Maqsood and Hassan Javed.

The LACAS team said there was a clear clash of civilizations between the Islamic and Western society, especially after the 9/11 incident. They said both civilizations had fundamental differences and were in direct clash with one another. They said that the clash was divided in four components political, economic, social and militarily.

The Beaconhouse team said that there was no clash of civilizations at all. They said the clash was clearly based on political and economic interests and it had nothing to do with religion. They said the West was divided on the Iraq issue, while the Muslim countries were divided as well because many of them supported America.

A total of 24 teams from Karachi, Peshawar, Lahore, Sialkot, Islamabad and other major cities participated in the championship. Mr Bandey said that out of the top 20 debaters, 10 would be short-listed and five debaters would be finalised by the judges to participate in international debates.
