Senate HR body concerned by gurdwara attack
ISLAMABAD: Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights Chairman Senator SM Zafar on Thursday expressed concern on the committee’s behalf about the incident in which students pelted stones at gurdwara Nankana Sahib in Sheikhupura. In a statement, he said the students were encouraged by miscreants to disturb the area’s peace. He said the incident was prompted by problems between the students and the local government. He reiterated the committee’s resolve to ensure complete protection for all minorities, particularly religious ones. He said the Sikh community had proven to be a model minority community in Pakistan. He said it was heartening to learn that the students had apologised to the Sikh community after the incident. He lauded the role of religious, educational and administrative authorities in defusing the tensions after the incident. Mr Zafar assured the minority community that the upper house of parliament was determined to protect their rights. staff report
