Hurriyat leader shot dead in Srinagar
SRINAGAR: Two gunmen shot dead Mohammad Rafiq Shaheen, head of the People’s Liberation League, days after New Delhi said it would try to resume a stalled dialogue with separatists. Shaheen’s group is a smaller constituent of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC).
The unidentified men shot Shaheen, a former militant, outside his home in Srinagar and fled from the scene. He was taken to hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The new Congress-led Indian government said last weekend that it was ready for unconditional talks with Hurriyat, softening its earlier stand that such talks must take place within the Indian constitution, holding Kashmir to be an integral part of the country.
In a separate incident on Thursday, two civilians were killed and four were injured when a landmine aimed at an army convoy blew up a civilian vehicle on the highway from Srinagar to Baramulla, police said. agencies
