‘Applause’ — Gaga’s much-awaited disappointment
By Huma Rana
Lady Gaga is back with a new single after more than two years. Universal Music released her new song “Applause” on August 13, ahead of the scheduled date, which was August 19. It came out earlier than expected, due to an Internet leak from a hacker, which Gaga was furious over. The single hasn’t disappointed her fans, but critics are sceptical. The song got 218,000 downloads in its first week of release, which was hardly impressive.
The song itself has a different tune than her previous material. The upbeat track has more electronic pop and techno influence and no one can deny it’s a catchy tune. However, the vocals were oddly pitched; but maybe she was going for that? The lyrics have us wondering whether she wants us to love her or to hate her. The narcissism they imply is a little too direct for our taste.
In the video, Gaga wears no more clothing than usual in a clam bikini, if we can even call it that, covering just the basics. She shows off her artistic side with influences from German cinema, ‘Black Swan’, Hillary Clinton and Janet Jackson’s Rolling Stone cover. Interestingly, her feud with pop legend Madonna didn’t quite stop Gaga from showing allusions from Madonna’s “Vogue” video. Although she did have us questioning the smearing of paint on her face, Joker style. The amount of pop culture references was a little outlandish, but as she says “Pop culture was an art, now art’s a pop culture in me.”
The song got positive reviews on Twitter. One fan Tweeted “Can’t stop listening to this, been dancing round my room to it since I’ve awoken #APPLAUSE” -@KarmasKKK. (sic)
The song not only attracted females of the younger generation but males as well. Brandon Standley Tweeted “I just realized... School isn’t so bad cause I’m going to walk in listening to #applause cause I am fabulous. People better applaud me.” (sic)
At least she’s giving her fans a boost in self-confidence.
The performance she gave on the MTV Video Music Awards 2013, which were held on Sunday, was directly inspired by the music video, in which she wears the exact outfits from the video. Overshadowed by a raunchy Miley Cyrus, Gaga hardly got any reviews or attention about her first performance of the single at the awards show. Some might think it was boring compared to Miley’s antics. Well, at least now we have an idea of what her album ‘Artpop’ is going to sound like, a little bit all over the place.
Gaga has become a phenomenon and entertains us in a way that no other artist does. What can we say! She indeed lives for the ‘applause’!
