Sindh, Balochistan have more positive attitude towards entrepreneurship

KARACHI: The findings of the second Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Pakistan’s study pioneered by the Center for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) were released in a public ceremony on at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Main Campus. GEM is an international research initiative to promote entrepreneurship and is implemented in more than 80 nations. The GEM studies are conducted under the auspices of the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association and Entrepreneurs. Policy makers and educators around the world are using the GEM reports to create awareness and enhance learning about the entrepreneurial process. Speaking on the occasion, IBA Dean & Director Dr Ishrat Husain said, “I am confident that the research findings will help our policy makers, researchers and educators in Pakistan to create awareness and enhance learning about the entrepreneurial process with the aim of creating new opportunities for our aspiring entrepreneurs by improving support for new and innovative business ventures.” He congratulated team of GEM for completion of report. The GEM Pakistan project was launched in June 2010 under the supervision of IBA. In this regard, an in-depth analysis of the state of entrepreneurship and start-up business activity in Pakistan was carried out. GEM research consortium measured entrepreneurial activity of individuals in 54 member economies, making it the world’s most authoritative comparative study of entrepreneurial activity in the general adult population. Two thousand adults aged 18-64 participated in the GEM Pakistan Survey in 2011. As part of this nation-wide effort, detailed interviews were conducted with the top-notch national experts in the field to discuss key conditions that govern a country’s entrepreneurial development. The research highlighted that entrepreneurial activity in various Pakistani regions and the adult population in Pakistan trying to start a business was 9.07% as compared to other factor-driven economies such as 14.5% in Iran, 11.87% in Turkey and 23% in Chile. Furthermore it revealed that the residents of Sindh and Balochistan have more favourable attitude towards entrepreneurship and are optimistic about the opportunities in the future. The report reveals that Baluchistan has the highest rate of active involvement in startup effort, while Punjab has the highest rate of established business owners. It is hoped that this study will help the entrepreneurs, policy makers and educators in Pakistan to come up with an appropriate strategy to develop, inculcate and promote entrepreneurial culture in Pakistan. staff report
