Senior police officer killed in Karachi

* Two private company employees injured in bus attack

KARACHI: A senior police official and his friend were shot dead in Korangi police precincts.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Shah Muhammad was leaving after a routine medical checkup at a private clinic in Bengali Para. The SP and his friend Dr Dilshad were standing outside the clinic when four people riding two motorcycles approached them and opened fire on them. SP Shah’s guard, Constable Riaz, told police the clinic owner, Dr Dilshad, were standing outside the clinic when the assailants opened fire.

SP Shah, Dr Dilshad and Constable Riaz received six, four and three bullets respectively. The SP and the doctor died on their way to hospital while Constable Riaz has been admitted to the Jinnah Hospital.

Sindh Inspector General (IG) Mushtaq Shah reached the scene and declared the incident target killing. Talking to reporters, the inspector general said, “We are trying to probe the motive behind the murders. It could be a result of the deceased’s participation in the 1990s Karachi Operation as he was then Gulberg station house officer.”

In 1990, SP Shah Muhammad was the Gulberg SHO where the brother and nephew of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain were gunned down during the operation. A police source said that the deceased was among the nominated accused in the killing. A first information report (FIR 130/97) was also registered against him on the complaint of MQM leader Shoaib Bokhari and police officers, including Rao Anwar and Ahmed Shah.

The SP is survived by two wives and five children. His first wife and children are in Punjab. He tied the knot for the second time with a woman, Kaneez Fatima, a resident of Gulistan-e-Jauhar two months ago. He was promoted to the senior superintendent of police in March.

Meanwhile, unidentified assailants riding six motorcycles opened fire on a bus in the Sharafi Goth police precincts. Two passengers sustained bullet injuries. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Fateh Muhammad Sangri said that the bus was carrying the employees of AGI Company when around a dozen men with sophisticated weapons intercepted the vehicle and opened fire on it. Two people, including a woman Aasia Bashir, sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to the Jinnah Hospital.
