Parliament throws its weight behind Gilani

* NA, Senate pass resolutions in favour of PM

* Repose complete confidence in Gilani as constitutionally and democratically elected prime minister

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The two houses of parliament, Senate and National Assembly, passed separate resolutions on Thursday in support of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, reposing confidence in him following his conviction.

Leader of the House in Senate, Jahangir Badr, presented the resolution, and the government got it passed with the help of its allies. It read, “This House reposes complete confidence in Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani as the constitutionally and democratically elected prime minister and unanimously elected chief executive of this country. This House commends the PM for upholding the majesty of law by personally appearing thrice, on being summoned by the Supreme Court and showing great humility and respect to the apex court.”

The National Assembly, in its resolution, reposed confidence in Gilani and urged against adoption of unconstitutional procedure for his disqualification. “This House reposes complete confidence in the prime minister as the constitutionally and democratically elected prime minister and unanimously elected chief executive of this country,” said the resolution presented to the House by Law Minister Farooq H Naek. The House appreciated the “firmness and dignity” displayed by Prime Minister Gilani in upholding the constitution and parliamentary democracy in the country. The premier thanked President Zardari and leaders of allied parties for their support. The House saw a noisy protest from the opposition PML-N lawmaker, who also staged a sit-in.
