Girl guides to mark World Thinking Day today
ISLAMABAD: Girl guides and scouts across the globe including Pakistan would observe World Thinking Day on Wednesday (today) with a commitment to promote volunteerism and encourage youth to save the environment.
Both public and private organisations arrange a number of activities every year to mark the day, which is also the birthday of Scouting and Guiding founders Robert Baden-Powell and Olave Baden-
Powell. Therefore, this day is also celebrated as Founders' Day. The theme of World Thinking Day this year is Environment: UN Millennium Development Goal 7: Girls worldwide say ‘We can save our planet.’ Pakistan Girl Guide Association (PGGA) also arranged a number of activities to mark the day encouraging girl guides to extend their cooperation in community development programmes.
Talking to APP, Islamabad Capital Territory Commissioner Nazima Khan said that a programme was arranged at the federal level during the last week, which was attended by over 400 girl guides. Colourful stalls were set up at the Federal Government Higher Secondary School, I-9 and a rally was also organised to carry forward the message of guiding. She said the event was arranged prior to the date due to the non-availability of PGGA National Commissioner Farhana Azeem. The message of guiding was read by Farhana Azeem, while the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) director general attended the programme as the chief guest and appreciated the girl guides.
She said mini books on guiding principles, donated by UNICEF were also distributed among junior and senior guides. An annual award ceremony also held on the occasion. Most recently, the World Association of Girl Guides and Scouts selected an important international issue as the theme for each year's World Thinking Day.
Girl guides and scouts use the themes as an opportunity to study and appreciate other countries and cultures, and equally increase awareness and sensitivity on global concerns.
Donations are collected, which support projects to help girl guides and scouts around the world. app
