FIA, PTA told to preserve record of Shahzad’s mobile phone

LAHORE: A judicial commission headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar of the Supreme Court, on the first day of its proceedings in journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad murder case, directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to preserve the record of Shahzad’s mobile phone.

The commission also directed the FIA to access Shahzad’s e-mails and produce the record before the commission on July 6. Federal Information Secretary Taimoor Azmat Usman, being the secretary of the judicial commission, informed reporters that the commission directed the PTA chairman to preserve the record of calls of Shahzad’s mobile phone.

Usman informed that a secretariat had been set up at Islamabad centre of the Pakistan Television and the relatives, friends, journalists and public at large had been invited to contact the commission if they had any information about the murder case.

He said that the commission had directed both Punjab and Islamabad inspectors general of police, Javed Iqbal and Binyamin, to carry out the investigation into the case and keep the commission informed about progress on each hearing.

On Monday, the proceedings were held at the Supreme Court’s Lahore Registry. The commission is headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar while Federal Shariat Court Chief Justice Agha Rafique Ahmad Khan, Punjab and Islamabad IGs and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists’ President Pervez Shaukat attended the commission proceedings as its members. Federal information secretary also joined the proceedings and produced all the available record pertaining to the murder case.
