Rains, hailstorms lash Balochistan for 4th day

By Mohammad Zafar

QUETTA: The intermittent rains accompanied by a hailstorm lashed different parts of Balochistan for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, damaging mud houses, railway tracks and farmlands in Chagai, Naushki, Panjgur, Harani, Naushki, Khuzdar, Kalat, Ziarat, Bolan and Nasirabad.

A teenage boy was killed and two other students suffered injuries due to landsliding in Harnai. The road link between Ziarat and Quetta was also disrupted due to heavy rains.

According to reports, many low-lying villages in Naushki have been inundated by rainwater, which damaged mud houses. The flash floods also washed away hundreds of acres of agricultural lands in Naushki.

Several villages, including Killi Dak Essa Chah, Zahid Chah and Dorki Chah, have been inundated by floodwater, forcing the people to move to drier places. The residents demanded immediate relief operation in the area by declaring it a calamity-hit district.

The intermittent rain and floodwater swept away many mudhouses in Chagai district. The rail link between Quetta to Taftan was also disrupted for 24 hours as a portion of the track was washed away.

The heavy showers also caused damages to mud houses in Wadh and other areas of Khuzdar district. Similarly, many houses were partially damaged in Panjgur where heavy downpours have been lashing the area for the past three days.

Many downstream villages of Jaffarabad district were also inundated in rainwater, forcing people to move to safer places.

According to reports, many districts, including Panjgur, Chagai, Naushki and Khuzdar have been without electricity for the past 24 hours, increasing the difficulties of the people.
