NDMA bans direct assistance to flood victims

Staff Report

QUETTA: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has formally banned international donor agencies, international aid organisations and non-government organisations (NGOs) from directly assisting the flood-affected people of Balochistan.

This information was formally given to the Balochistan Chief Minister Aslam Raisani who was presiding over a meeting held to review the ongoing relief efforts for the flood-affected people in Quetta.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority director general informed the meeting that the ban had slowed down the pace of relief operations. The CM told the meeting that he would discuss the issue with the NDMA and Islamabad. Raisani directed that Rs 10 million each should be contributed amongst the flood-affected people by the members of provincial assembly (MPAs) concerned of the affected constituencies.

The meeting also saw a proposal being made to hold a donor conference in Balochistan, seeking international assistance from the international aid agencies and Pakistan-friendly countries. Earlier, the CM allocated Rs 10 million each for the relief camps established in Quetta and Sibi.
