BNP leader takes grievances to EU chief

* Akhtar Mengal says Balochistan situation going from bad to worse

By Mohammad Zafar

QUETTA: Balochistan National Party (BNP) President Sardar Akhtar Mengal called on the head of European Union at Brussels on Sunday and appraised him about the military operation in Balochistan, issues of missing persons, ethnic cleansing, eliminating Baloch political leaders and activists and alleged violation of human rights by the government functionaries.

According to the BNP secretary information, Mengal produced the memorandum, which he had sent to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon a few days ago. In the letter, Mengal mentioned that ethnic cleansing of Baloch political opponents was being carried out in the province. Bullet-riddled bodies of missing persons are being recovered and the issue of missing persons is still awaiting proper attention, he said.

During the meeting, the Baloch nationalist leader informed EU about the deteriorating security situation in Balochistan, which he said going from bad to worse.

“The Baloch political opponents are being brutally tortured in illegal torture cells and later their bullet-riddled bodies are thrown at isolated places,” he told the EU chief.

He said there were no law and constitution in the province because Baloch workers and students were being killed and picked up from public places, and on the other hand all the institutions and the state organs are endorsing the action by remaining silent.

He said it was the prime duty of his party to highlight critical issues so that the UN, EU and the world community are aware of the action of security forces against the Baloch people.

Mengal informed the EU chief that the BNP would not remain silent on the excesses being committed against the Balochs.
