NATO must stop cross border flow into Afghanistan, says ISPR DG

LONDON: Security at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border is a joint responsibility and NATO must stop cross-border flow as it is hampering efforts to crush the Taliban in Afghanistan, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Athar Abbas said on Monday.

He said this in a presentation to the Royal United Services Institute, a leading British Defence think tank.

He said there were 821 Pakistan Army checkpoints on the border, but only 112 Afghan Army or NATO posts.

On the question of Pakistan’s plans to launch a military operation in North Waziristan, he said a final date had not been set yet. He said that factions within the Afghan Taliban had begun fighting against the Arab al Qaeda operatives and their allies during recent weeks.

“There is internal fighting between the Taliban factions and, as a result, the al Qaeda presence in North Waziristan has been forced into a compressed space,” the ISPR chief said. app
