WASHINGTON: Top American administration and military leaders attended a dinner hosted on Monday evening by Pakistan’s ambassador in honour of visiting Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani. US special envoy to Pakistan Richard Holbrooke, Senator Richard Lugar, Howard Berman, chairman of the House on Foreign Affairs Committee, US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson and Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Richard Boucher attended the reception. US Air chief General Norton Schwartz, Naval Chief Admiral Gary Roughead, Commandant Marine Corps General James Terry Conway and Vice Admiral Jeffrey A Wieringa represented the Pentagon. “The US and Pakistan are partners and allies, against the forces of terror,” Ambassador Husain Haqqani told the gathering. He said Pakistan was not fighting a proxy war, but fighting for its soul because “it is our women, children and soldiers who are dying”. app
