Departments directed to slash wasteful expenditures
Staff Report
LAHORE: The Punjab government has directed all administrative secretaries to prevent “wasteful current expenditures” to boost savings for the public exchequer, sources said on Monday.
The sources said the Finance Department deducted 5 percent under the current expenditures head of all departments when funds were released in July this year. According to a letter by the chief secretary, all administrative secretaries are required to “objectively analyse” their current budget as part of efforts to curtail wasteful expenditure and facilitate savings. They have also been directed to come up with an action plan to achieve revenue targets assigned to their departments.
Department heads have been directed to implement the orders immediately, otherwise all supplementary grant requests may be withheld, said the sources. Several officials said while millions of rupees were being spent on the renovation and restoration of the Chief Secretary’s Block and other buildings in Civil Secretariat, departments were being “forced to save under the current expenditures head”.
