Celebrating Eid with an air of sacrifice

LAHORE: As with most other religious festivals, Eidul Azha is celebrated in the city with the traditional Lahori zeal. However, with a military operation raging on in the northwestern regions and the threat of terrorism looming large over the entire country, this Eid may yet be a little subdued. Celebrated to commemorate the spirit of sacrifice demonstrated by the Prophet Ibrahim (AS), citizens renew their pledge to work for national solidarity, integrity and prosperity of the country on this auspicious day. Hundreds of believers will head to mosques and Eidgahs early this morning to offer Eid prayers at over 500 designated places in different parts of the city. The largest Eid congregation in the city will be held at the historic Badshahi Mosque where Governor Punjab Salmaan Taseer will also offer Eid prayers. Eid congregations will also be held at Data Darbar, Masjid Shuhada, Masjid Wazir Khan, Minhajul Quran, Bagh-e-Jinnah, Lawrence Road, Karbala Gamay Shah and Islampura Mosque. Special prayers will be offered for the liberation of all occupied Muslim territories including Indian-held Kashmir and Palestine. Clerics and prayer leaders from different schools of thought will deliver special sermons and lectures to highlight the significance of the day and call upon Muslims to follow the teachings of Islam. Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV), Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) and private channels have prepared special programmes for the auspicious occasion. Newspapers will also take out special editions to highlight the distinctive features of the sacred day. Meanwhile, Inspector Generals Prisons Punjab Kokab Nadeem Warraich said special arrangements had also been made for Eid prayers at all jails across the province and DIGs, superintendents, deputy and assistant superintendents will offer prayers with inmates in their respective prisons. Lahore Zoo Director Syed Zafarul Hassan said the management had also made special arrangements for a variety of programmes to attract visitors during Eid holidays. app
