Mukhtar says he will resign if proven guilty under NRO

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar said that he was surprised to see his name on the list of beneficiaries of the National Reconciliation Ordinance’s (NRO) and pledged to resign if proven guilty. Addressing a press conference at the Pakistan International Airlines building, he said his name had been wrongly included in the NRO list. “I will resign if it is proven that I am one of those who faced corruption cases and were exonerated after promulgation of the NRO,” he said. The minister said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed one case against him in Lahore about textile export quota and another in Karachi about the sale of rice. He said he had been acquitted in both the cases after being proven innocent, and not on the basis of the NRO, adding that the NRO was promulgated after his acquittal. Mukhtar said he was a victim and not a beneficiary of the NRO and would talk to the prime minister about it. “I am also meeting the president today (Monday) and will discuss the issue with him,” he added. He alleged that he was being politically victimised by NAB and certain other authorities. However, he said the president and the government were not involved in this conspiracy, as they could not work against their own ministers. The minister said the cabinet was not taken into confidence before making public the list of NRO beneficiaries. staff report
