PPP legislators in Gilgit-Baltistan call on Zardari
* President says PPP will follow in Benazir’s footsteps
ISLAMABAD: A delegation of the elected Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) representatives in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections called on President Asif Ali Zardari at the Presidency on Monday.
The delegation, led by the PPP Gilgit-Baltistan President Syed Mehdi Shah, included Aftab Haider, Muhammad Ali Akhter, Wazir Baig, Sheikh Nisar Hussain, Shakil Ahmad, Wazir Hassan, Syed Muhammad Ali Shah Rizvi, Hamid Khan, Muhammad Naseer, Ali Madad Sher, Muhammad Jaffer, Muhammad Ismail and Ayub Shah.
Gilgit-Baltistan Governor and Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, Labour Minister Syed Khursheed Shah, MNA Rukhsana Bangash, MNA Fouzia Habib and president’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar also attended the meeting.
The president felicitated the elected representatives on their victory and urged them “to rise to the expectations of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan who have reposed great confidence in the PPP”.
Footsteps: The president said the party would continue to serve the people by following in the footsteps of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, adding the people of Gilgit-Baltistan had made great sacrifices for democracy and the country.
The president said the government was working on various projects for poverty alleviation in Gilgit-Baltistan and was keen to exploit the economic potential of the region.
The president said there was great potential for projects to generate electricity in Gilgit-Baltistan and assured the delegation that the government had drawn up plans to harness the potential. Zardari said the PPP would continue its policy of reconciliation.
Members of the delegation said they would work for the welfare and uplift of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
