NDMA hands over USAR team to CDA
ISLAMABAD: Two highly sophisticated and well-equipped Urban Search and Rescue Teams, raised by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) with the cooperation of Swedish, British and Swiss agencies, completed their training phase on Monday and Islamabad team was formally handed over to Capital Development Authority (CDA). According to NDMA, after completion of 18 months training phase these teams participated in first ever National Urban Search and Rescue Exercise in Karachi and Islamabad on a simulated scenario of collapsed structures. The operational command of one of these two teams was handed over to city district government by NDMA in Karachi on November12 and the second team was handed over to CDA in a ceremony held at USAR Academy in Islamabad on Monday. NDMA Chairman Lt Gen (r) Farooq Ahmed Khan, handed over the operational command of 86-member USAR team to CDA Chairman Imtiaz Inayat Elahi. During the ceremony both the Karachi and Islamabad teams demonstrated their skills. Approximately $2 million worth of search and rescue equipment and training facilities have been arranged by NDMA for each team.
