PAFIS to be implemented in 72 district police HQs

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to implement the second phase of its Pakistan Automated Fingerprint Identification System (PAFIS) in police headquarters of 72 districts including the federal capital, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The project would help enhance the operational capacity of police in combating crimes and terrorism on scientific basis. The system would also offer a database-sharing facility to police and other law enforcement agencies.
The project would also impart training to fingerprint operators and experts to enable them to gather fingerprints from the crime scene.
According to the project’s working paper, its total cost has been estimated at Rs 693 million, including Rs 494.926 million in local funding and Rs 198.475 million in foreign exchange component. The Central Development Working Party had approved Rs 10 million as an initial funding for the project in a meeting on November 19. The Interior Ministry is sponsoring the project and the National Police Bureau is executing it. The official timeframe for its completion is 24 months.
