QUETTA: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has succeeded in garnering support for from all major political parties for its provincial assembly candidate Tahir Mehmood. He is the brother of the former Balochistan education minister, who was assassinated last month.
According to the party, the assassinated minister’s brother was issued a PPP ticket and is expected to win the PB-I (Quetta-1) seat unopposed in order to send a clear message to terrorists that they cannot undermine the government’s resolve. After the slain minister’s seat fell vacant, the PPP leadership decided to field Tahir as a replacement candidate to acknowledge his brother’s contributions to the party and democracy as a whole. The Pashtunkhawa Milli Awami Party announced on Friday their backing for Mehmood as the PPP candidate to express solidarity with the slain minister’s family.
Similarly, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also announced its unconditional support for the PPP candidate after a meeting between PPP Balochistan President Senator Lashkari Raisani and the PML-N Balochistan President Sardar Yaqoob Nasir. Nasir told reporters that his party believed in ensuring continuity in the democratic process and regretted the education minister’s assassination.
