PML-Q demands Karzai curb use of Afghan land against Pakistan

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Secretary General Mushahid Hussain on Friday asked Afghan President Hamid Karzai not to allow the use of his country’s territory against Pakistan under Indian pressure.

Talking to reporters at PML House, Mushahid said Pakistan wanted a stable and peaceful Afghanistan, as it was in Islamabad’s own interest.

"Pakistan hosted 3 million Afghan refugees in a difficult situation for over 30 years. We extend full support to Karzai during his second term," he added.

The PML-Q leader welcomed the resumption of dialogue between New Delhi and Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) separatists, but said Pakistani and Azad Jammu and Kashmir leaders should also be included in the dialogue.

"We want the dialogue to be result-oriented, as dialogue for the sake of dialogue would deteriorate the situation further," he said.

Urging the Indian government to demilitarise IHK, Mushahid said the Indian government should allow journalists and human rights activists to visit IHK.

Mushahid also asked the NWFP government not to indulge in trivial issues like renaming Pakistan, saying that provincial authorities should focus on their duties rather than renaming the country and the province.

"It seems that the NWFP government has devised no counter-terrorism strategy and instead of focusing on that, the government is indulging in non-issues," he added.

PML-Q NWFP President Amir Muqam warned the provincial government against massive displacement of population from Peshawar in the wake of the recent wave of terrorist attacks in the city.

"People are packing their belongings for leaving Peshawar because the authorities have failed to counter attacks on the city," he said. Asked how the provincial government could curb terrorism, Muqam said there was only one road that linked Khyber Agency to Peshawar.

"But the authorities have failed to secure the Jamrud Road," he added. PML-Q leaders Imtyaz Ranjha, Arbab Hashim Kasi, Mustafa Malik and Haleem Adil Sheikh were also present.
