GCU resonates with Faiz’s poetry
LAHORE: The Government College University (GCU) on Friday resonated with the memory of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, one of the most famous modern Urdu poets, and rendition of his poetry. The Urdu Department had organised a special function on 25th death anniversary of Faiz and the GCU Music Society members arranged a special music gala to pay tribute to the progressive poet. Prof Dr Nabeela Kayani of the English Department presented a paper, describing Faiz as a pillar of Urdu poetry. Faiz rejected fascism, she said, adding he struggled for justice, equality and enlightenment throughout his life. That is why Faiz is considered one of the most important poets of modern Ghazal, she said. Trade unionism, communism, romance and journalism were different aspects of his personality, she said. Urdu Department Chairman Dr Saadat Saeed discussed aspects of Faiz’s personality and revolutionary features of his poetry. The Government College is Faiz’s alma mater from where he earned a Bachelors degree in Arabic, followed by a Masters in English in 1932, he said.
