NRO withdrawn on allies’ demands, says Kaira
LAHORE: The PPP-led government withdrew the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) from parliament due to the opinions of its coalition partners, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Thursday. Talking to Business Plus host Shahzeb Khanzada on his programme NewsLine, Kaira said the party did not fear the NRO and was ready go to courts, which he hoped would do justice. He said if the government had taken action against former president Pervez Musharraf, it would have been considered a unilateral action. Kaira said allegations of corruption against politicians were a routine matter, but questioned the media’s role in highlighting corruption by dictators. The minister said the PPP had addressed several important issues, which no other government had dared to take up. He said the PPP tried its best to build a consensus on the National Finance Commission Award, address the sensitive issue of Balochistan and conduct the military operations against the Taliban. Kaira pointed out that corruption existed in all institutions of the country and asked the people to come forward with evidence of such practices so that legal action could be taken against the culprits. He said the country’s tax collection system was weak and needed reform. Kaira, who is also the acting governor of the Gilgit-Baltistan region, said election for the region’s legislative assembly were successful and allegations of rigging were baseless. daily times monitor
