Junior World Golf Championships: PGF holds trials, selects four-member squad

LAHORE: The Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) has launched some intense golfing activity to popularise the sport and develop players of substance who can turn out to be champions of the future. The big initiative came when the PGF and the provincial golf bodies of Punjab, Sindh and North West Frontier Province decided to select a national team for participation in the Singha Thailand Junior World Golf Championships to be held at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, Prachuaclahirikhan from November 25.
The trials were first held here the other day at the provincial level for young ones in the age category of 13 to 15 years and in the age category of 15 to 17 years. It was interesting to see the eager and charged up ones prepared for this test of ability. They showed enough courage during the competitive rounds to demonstrate what they were capable of.
Those who made it to the national trials stage in the below 15 years were Azam Khan, Mahad Zafar, Minhaj Maqsood, Murtaza, Fawad Trimzi, Hamza Gilani and Aman Tariq. And as for the 15 to 17 years category, the participants who came into final reckoning were Saad Waheed Qazi, Omer Khokhar, Sameer Merchant, Syed Labeeb Ahmad, Uzair Khan, Saif Hussain, Aman Ashraf, Easa Ayyaz, Danyal Shafiq, Ahmad Hassan, Mohammad Saleem and Danyal Asim. After two rounds trials at the national level, those who made it to the national junior team were Umer Khokhar (PAF Islamabad) and Saad Waheed (Islamabad) in the 15 to 17 years age bracket and Mahad Zafar (Lahore Gymkhana) and Azam Khan (Islamabad) in 13 plus age bracket. The team will be proceeding to Thailand on November 22.
Simultaneously the national golf team comprising Ali Hai, Aleem ur Rehman, Mohammad Safdar and Zulfiqar Ali have returned from Sri Lanka after participating in the Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship. Pakistan came second in the team event where Sri Lanka won. Bangladesh were third and India fourth.
