Sindh transvestites to boycott sugar use
KARACHI: Despite the government’s purported efforts to eradicate sugar scarcity, it seems unlikely that the crisis would end any time soon. The crisis has irked the citizens throughout the country, including the transvestite community, who have decided to boycott sugar consumption as an expression of protest. Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA) Secretary General Saniya Baloch said the call for boycotting sugar would be issued from her organisation’s platform, mobilising their community throughout Sindh, enabling the transvestites to join the protest on the national level. She said GIA has also organised a mass protest demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club today, in which dozens of transvestites from different areas of the city would gather to record their protest. “We are also a part of this society. Therefore, it is our individual responsibility to express solidarity with the rest of the citizens in all crises,” she said. “We are also planning to ask the government to meet our other demands, such as special identity cards, ensuring equal status to transvestites, and providing funds to GIA,” she added. amar guriro
