Shia cleric shot dead in Orangi

KARACHI: A Shia cleric was gunned down on Thursday in Orangi Town, within the jurisdiction of Tori Bungash police station. Police claim this was an incident of target killing.
According to details, Ghulam Muhammad Waezi, a cleric of Imambargah Safina-e-Ahlebait, which is located in the Raees Ambrohi Colony, was shot by unidentified motorcyclists at Riaz Chowk, Masoomabad, Sector 11/1 in Orangi Town.
The assailants managed to flee after spraying the cleric with bullets. The wounded was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The Trustee of the Imambargah, Syed Mubashir Ali, said the victim was a resident of Jaffar Tayyar, Malir 15 and was on his way to offer Isha prayers when the incident occurred. The cleric was shot thrice. He hailed from Baltistan and left behind a widow and three children. The FIR of the incident was not registered till this report was filed while the body was handed over to the heirs after an autopsy.
Constable killed: Firing by unidentified men killed a police constable, Mohammad Miskeen, 42, and wounded two other people during an encounter at the Jubilee Cloth Market.
Accident: Wali Muhammad, 12, was knocked to death by a speeding bus of route No 20. The Mochko police said the child was on his way home when the bus hit him, adding that the driver escaped after the accident. The police have impounded the vehicle and registered an FIR against the unknown driver.
Clashes at three edu institutions: Clashes between rival student organisations left eight students wounded and curricular activities of three institutions suspended. As per the Saddar police, students affiliated with the People’s Student Federation (PSF) and Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) clashed in three separate educational institutions, namely Urdu University, SM Arts College and Aisha Bawany College.
Members of PSF and IJT used stones and rods to injure each other, and as the situation worsened, both parties opened fired on each other, which subsequently wounded eight students.
All the injured students belonged to the PSF, and they were identified as Ghulam Abbas, Shahzad, Arshad, Qasim, Amanullah, Wajih, Danis and Noorullah.
On the complaint of PSF’s Noorul Islam, the Saddar police have registered an FIR against Faizyabul Hassan and nine other activists of the IJT. The cause of the clashes was yet to be ascertained until the filing of this report. However, the police have termed it as a series of clashes that have been taking place in different colleges in the last couple of weeks.
