BoP loan scam: NAB arrests Sheikh Afzal’s wife, son

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday arrested the wife and son of Sheikh Afzal, chairman of Haris Steel Industries and the main accused in the Rs 9 billion Bank of Punjab loan scam.

Fareeha Afzal and her son Hamza were returning from Dubai when they were arrested at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport after NAB received a tip-off.

Sheikh Afzal and his son Haris, who were earlier arrested from Malaysia, have been moved to Chamba House after they were brought to Pakistan.

Sources said Fareeha and Hamza had around Rs 1.25 billion in their bank accounts, indicating that the two were also involved in the loan scam.

The sources said the arrested accused were residing in a palace in the Emirates Hills area of Dubai, owned four luxury vehicles and an “army of servants”.

The sources said NAB had raided a house a few months ago on information provided by Seth Yaqoob, brother of Sheikh Afzal, and recovered two suitcases, which contained around 5 kilogrammes of gold jewellery, another 2 kgs of diamonds and a large amount of foreign currency.

They said at that time Hamza had escaped just before the raid with two suitcases full of gold bricks. NAB has started investigating the arrested people at Chamba House. Sheikh Afzal and Harris Afzal will be brought to an accountability court today (Thursday) for their physical remand, while NAB obtained a 30-day remand for Fareeha and Hamza on Wednesday. aaj kal report
