‘Present situation a charge sheet against civilian, military leadership’

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The country’s prevailing situation is a charge sheet against the civilian and military leadership, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Munawwar Hassan said on Wednesday.

“The rulers do not provide food, shelter and clothes to the masses, and then put civilians in danger,” he said while addressing a “Go America Go” rally organised by the JI women’s wing. He said those who had approved and executed military operations were to blame for the blood of innocent civilians that followed.

He said the people had rejected the National Reconciliation Ordinance. “The government is no longer protesting against US drone attacks as the rulers cannot guard the sovereignty of the country,” he said.

Hassan said that US private security firm Blackwater had virtually taken over Islamabad, while army spokesmen were reluctant in holding India responsible for the turmoil in Pakistan. He said the US and UK were mulling over holding talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan while pressing Islamabad to continue action against the same elements in Pakistan.

Pakistani held in Thailand with heroin-filled condoms in stomach

BANGKOK: Thai customs officials on Wednesday said they had arrested a Pakistani man at Bangkok's main international airport with 54 condoms in his stomach containing over 500 grammes of heroin.

Kamran Pervaiz Butt, 24, was arrested at Suvarnabhumi International Airport early on Tuesday on a Thai Airways flight from Islamabad, customs authorities said in a statement.

Thai authorities had received a tip-off about the presence of a drug smuggler on the flight and stopped Butt because of his suspicious conduct as he went through the “nothing-to-declare” channel at customs, they said.

An initial search of his body and bags did not reveal anything but X-rays later showed that he had swallowed 54 condoms packed with heroin, the statement said.

The total weight of the drugs was 570 grammes with a street value of approximately $50,000 in Thailand, the authorities said.

Butt was charged with possession and trafficking of Class A drugs, which carries a possible death sentence in Thailand. afp
