‘Fazlullah safe in Afghanistan’

Staff Report

PESHAWAR: The military refused comment on a BBC report on Tuesday that quoted Swat Taliban leader Fazlullah as saying he has escaped the military operation in Swat and “reached Afghanistan safely”.

“We are yet to establish the veracity of this report,” said army spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas.

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik earlier said Fazlullah was wounded in the operation, and security forces would soon capture him.

However, Fazlullah told a BBC journalist over the telephone that he had “reached Afghanistan safely” – denying rumours that he is already in the custody of the army.

According to the BBC report, Fazlullah read out a statement saying he would “soon launch attacks” against security forces in Swat.
