‘Those looking to weaken PPP living in fool’s paradise’

* President Zardari says PPP has not gained political victories through charity

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: A campaign to “malign” the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is aimed at weakening the party politically, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Monday, but those looking to “weaken us politically are living in a fool’s paradise”.

“The PPP is a huge political force, and it is fully prepared to face all challenges confronting it politically,” Zardari said while addressing the central executive committee (CEC) of the party – which met at the Presidency on Monday.

Zardari – presiding over the meeting and referring to reports of changes in government and about his office – said the PPP had not gained political victories through charity, but had triumphed politically with the help of the people of all provinces.

“No matter what our opponents say and no matter how much the party leadership is subjected to a malicious campaign, the party will not be deterred and will continue its forward march to serve the masses,” he said.

Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar quoted Zardari as saying that the PPP had formed a government with coalition partners in the Centre and all provinces, “embarking on a course of political and economic reformation and reconstruction”. He said the party had a long history of sacrifices for the sake of democracy and peoples’ rights, and it was not afraid of making more sacrifices if the arose.

The president – also the co-chairman of the PPP – said the results of elections in Gilgit-Baltistan had “convincingly demonstrated” that the people stood by the PPP and rejected the malicious campaign against the ruling party, said Babar.

“Without naming anyone, the president said that some people write our obituaries almost daily, but the more they write our obituaries the more they are disappointed and frustrated. I salute the party, its workers and the people. We have stood together in the past and will stand together in the future,” Babar quoted the president as saying.

He said a number of participants gave their own assessment of the political situation.

The meeting also adopted a unanimous resolution expressing confidence in Zardari and the government.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Jahangir Badar, Mian Raza Rabbani, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Faryal Talpur, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Naveed Qamar, Babar Awan, Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Shahbaz Bhatti, Rehman Malik, Sardar Latif Khosa, Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali, Yousaf Talpur, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Farahnaz Isphahani, Mir Ejaz Jhakrani, Farzana Raja and CEC members from all provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir attended the meeting.
