British soldier shot dead in Afghanistan

LONDON: A British soldier was shot dead while on foot patrol in Afghanistan, the UK Ministry of Defence said on Sunday. British military spokesman David Wakefield said the soldier was from the 7th Battalion The Rifles, but attached to the 3rd Battalion The Rifles Battle Group, was killed near Sangin in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan. “He died in the course of his duty. He will be missed by us, his comrades, and we will remember him,” he said. The death of the as yet unnamed soldier brings the British death toll in Afghanistan to 233 since 2001. afp
