PPP to protest against Musharraf’s comments

* NRO critics were actually beneficiaries

Staff Report

LAHORE: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab has announced it will protest against former president Pervez Musharraf’s statement about President Asif Ali Zardari.

Protests will be held at the district and tehsil levels outside press clubs across the province today (Monday). In Lahore, workers will demonstrate in front of the Lahore Press Club today (Monday) at 2pm. Senior Minister and PPP parliamentary leader in the Provincial Assembly Raja Riaz Ahmad and PPP Lahore President Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar will lead the protest to condemn the former president’s statement.

Members of Provincial Assembly (MPA) of PPP along with party workers and district office-bearers will participate in the protest. PPP sources told Daily Times that there was a possibility that PPP leaders would urge the government to take action against Pervez Musharraf as per Article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan. According to a statement issued on Sunday, Senior Provincial Minister Raja Riaz said that the parliamentary party of PPP Punjab would hold protests and raise the issue at all forums.

PPP Lahore president and Secretary Information Malik Azhar Mughal condemned the former president’s statement and said that such staments were a threat to the democratic process. They said that the party leadership and workers had faced imprisonments and trials in the past, but such politicians who left the country after making money would face now consequences. PPP leaders said that people who were making a fuss over the issue of the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) were the ‘most wanted’ people of the country. ‘In fact, they had looted the national exchequer and had no right
to criticise PPP leaders,’
they added.
