Zalmay Khalilzad meets Sherpao
ISLAMABAD: Former US ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, on Thursday met former interior minister Aftab Sherpao to exchange views on the Afghanistan situation.
Sources said the meeting was part of US efforts to consult various leaders to get first impressions of the prevailing situation in Afghanistan, before Washington formally announces the review of its Afghan policy and the dispatch of additional troops.
The two leaders agreed that it was essential to increase people-to-people contact between Pakistan and Afghan in order to ease the mistrust and promote an atmosphere of bilateral goodwill.
They also supported the jirga peace process between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Sherpao, who is the chairman of the Pakistani chapter of the peace jirga, said that it was a useful institution to address the problems faced by the Afghan people. staff report
