All my actions were legal, constitutional: Musharraf
LAHORE: Former president Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday said all his actions and steps as president were legal and constitutional, as parliament and the country’s courts had validated them.
Musharraf said all his steps were aimed at strengthening democracy in the country. In an interview with a private TV channel, Musharraf said he had good working relations with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif before October 1999. He said he had always supported the former prime minister and had been surprised by Nawaz’s decision of removing him from the post of army chief. To a question, Musharraf said the military operation in Balochistan against Nawab Akbar Bugti was the need of the hour.
He said the Marri, Bugti and Mangal tribes were fanning lawlessness in Balochistan by challenging the writ of the government. He said there was dire need to reform the parliamentary system by resolving all controversial and ambiguous issues and urged the introduction of good governance. To a question, he said a few groups like Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Tayyaba had been fighting against the Indian Army in Kashmir, adding that many such groups had been recruiting Pakistani youth to fight in Kashmir in the past. Musharraf said no one could harm the country until the Pakistan Army was there to protect it. daily times monitor
