Hockey team get rousing welcome on arrival

LAHORE: The Pakistan hockey team arrived back home here on Tuesday morning at the Allama Iqbal International Airport amid cheers from supporters after their triumph in the 2010 World Cup qualifying tournament in Lille, France. Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials including Khalid Basheer, Rana Mujahid, Akhtar Rasool, Shafiq Ahmed and others alongside dancing fans warmly received the team at the airport. On this occasion, PHF secretary Asif Bajwa talking to reporters said that the credit of the superb victory went to excellent teamwork. “We are hopeful that the team will continue to perform well with the Champions Challenge coming up next month,” he said. Team coach Shahid Ali Khan also lauded the performance and asked the fans to continue praying for the side. Pakistan defeated Japan 3-1 in the final of the qualifying tournament on Sunday to book their place in next year’s World Cup to be held at New Delhi from February 28 to March 13.
