US to forge wide-ranging ties with Pakistan: Holbrooke
WASHINGTON: The US is committed to forging a wide-ranging relationship with Pakistan, US special envoy Richard Holbrooke said on Tuesday. Calling US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s recent visit to Pakistan ‘extraordinary’, Holbrooke said, “Hillary is enormously popular, personally in Pakistan, but America is not popular. When she talked.... of a trust deficit, that’s what she was referring to,” he explained. Holbrooke said terrorists hiding in Afghanistan and the western parts of Pakistan posed a direct threat to Islamabad, the US, its allies and India. On Washington’s anti-terrorism policy, he said, “We remain committed to the core objectives of defeating and dismantling Al Qaeda, of helping strengthen civilian democratic rule in Pakistan, of strengthening the Afghan people’s government and its security forces.” app
