Sindh AG asked to assist court over CID’s status
Staff Report
KARACHI: A division bench of the Sindh High Court (SHC) comprising Justice Mushir Alam and Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi on Tuesday asked the Sindh advocate general and assistant advocate general to assist the court over the status of the CID police.
The bench earlier heard Sohail Hameed advocate, counsel for Naureen Zaheer, wife of Abdul Zaheer, against the CID, CCPO, Korangi Industrial Area TPO and a bank.
The counsel contended that the CID police is an investigating agency and have no powers to register or lodge an FIR. He maintained that under the Police Order 2002, only the operations police could lodge an FIR and not the investigating police or agency.
After a detailed hearing, the bench in its order stated that in order to solve the controversy as to whether the CID can register or investigate any crime, the Sindh advocate general and assistant advocate general are directed to ascertain the legal status of the police department. The court also ordered them to assist the court as to whether the CID has its own independent existence or is it merely a department under the regular police working under the home secretary.
The bench later adjourned the hearing of the petition for two weeks.
