Diplomatic Corps: Tunisian embassy celebrates ‘anniversary of change’

ISLAMABAD: The Ambassador of Republic of Tunisia and Mrs Mourad Bourehla on Friday hosted a reception to mark the 22nd Anniversary of the Change of November 7, 1987.

The day is considered as day of salvation as Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in a major address announced a number of measures to promote democracy and human rights to initiate a new era of development and modernisation.

A selected small number of guests including the diplomats, parliamentarians, businessmen, members of civil society and media people attended the reception held at the residence of the ambassador.

Federal Minister for Sports Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani officially represented the government. National Assembly Deputy Speaker Faysal Karim Kundi and former interior minister Aftab Sherpao were also present.

On this occasion, Tunisian Ambassador Mourad Bourehla said President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was committed to take the country into a new era by making economic progress.

“During his 22 years rule, the President has won the stakes of democratic transition with the rule of law and national harmony. The foundations of a true democracy have been set up in a progressive, secure and harmonious way, far from any upheavals,” he said.

He said Tunisia and Pakistan enjoyed a traditional and deep-rooted relationship and shared a common will and vision. “Pakistan is a brotherly country facing many challenges, we want to ensure you that Tunisia will stand with Pakistan in this difficult period,” he said.

The ambassador said the relations between Pakistan and Tunisia were very important for the people of the two countries for their well-being and mutual benefits. He said the both the counters had a long tradition of cooperation and coordination existing between the two countries at international fora, particularly the United Nations, the organization of Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement.

In his brief address, Jilani said Pakistan and Tunisia had close brotherly relations and Pakistan would continue to promote the ties for the greater mutual benefit. He thanked the Tunisian ambassador for supporting Pakistan.

The guests attending the reception used the opportunity to relax and discuss the prevailing political and security situation in Pakistan. They were interested to know possible outcome of the present tension between the presidency and “country’s powerful circles”. They were also keen to know about the operation in South Waziristan and Pakistan’s commitment to defeat terrorism.
