Ex-Gitmo prisoner to sue Musharraf in London court

* Claims he was tortured by US troops at Guantanamo after capture in Pakistan

By Iqbal Khattak

COPENHAGEN: A Sudanese man, formerly detained at the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, on Friday said he would file a criminal case against former president Pervez Musharraf for arresting him illegally.

Sami El-Haj, who works for Al-Jazeera, said he was “gathering evidence against Musharraf and will file a case against him in a British court”.

Sami spent six years in Guantanamo after he was arrested from Pakistan’s Chaman area on the border with Iran on December 15, 2001. “I want him [Musharraf] to be in jail,” he said.

The journalist, who said US personnel tortured him during his detention for his alleged links with Al Qaeda, told Daily Times that Musharraf himself said in his book that he had “sold” people to the US to “earn money”.

The statement, he said, was evidence itself.

“I had valid travel documents when I was arrested in Pakistan. I hold Musharraf responsible for my arrest and wait for the day when he is tried for this crime,” Sami said.
